Ahead of World Mental Health Day on Friday 10th October, Pieta, the suicide and self-harm prevention charity, is calling on communities across Ireland to host a ‘Pieta Tea and Talk Morning’ and raise vital funds for life-saving services.

The initiative, proudly supported by Lyons Tea, encourages families, friends, neighbours, workplaces and community groups to come together and connect over a simple cup of tea. Brewing a cuppa takes just a few minutes, and so does starting a conversation that could change someone’s life.

Billions of cups – now put them to good use

Ireland already knows the power of a good cup of tea. As a nation, we drink nearly 10 billion cups every year, around 27 million every single day. That’s enough to fill almost 4,000 Olympic size swimming pools. In fact, we pour five times more cups of tea daily than there are people in Ireland.

Now, Pieta and Lyons Tea are asking people to put those cups to work for an even bigger purpose, sparking conversations that matter and raising funds for suicide and self-harm prevention.

Suicide remains the leading cause of death for young people

Pieta’s figures show just how important these conversations can be. More than half of those supported by the charity are under the age of 25, and one in three are under 18. Many are facing extremely difficult challenges, with 84% experiencing suicidal thoughts and 70% struggling with self-harm. Suicide remains the leading cause of death for people aged 15–34 in Ireland.

Host a Pieta Tea and Talk Morning supported by Lyons Tea

Hosting a Pieta Tea and Talk Morning is simple. Select a date, either on World Mental Health Day itself (Friday, 10th October) or another day that week and choose a setting. It could be a cosy kitchen table gathering, a school staffroom tea break, or a larger community event. Every cup shared and every conversation started will help Pieta continue its free, life-saving work.

Speaking about the campaign, Stephanie Manahan, Chief Executive Officer of Pieta, said: “With World Mental Health Day fast approaching, we are thrilled to launch our Pieta Tea and Talk Morning supported by Lyons. As our figures show, the need for services is as great as ever – particularly for those aged under 25. That’s why we’re encouraging people across Ireland to sign up and host a Pieta Tea and Talk Morning. Every cup poured and every euro raised helps us break the stigma and support people in crisis. Together, these small acts of kindness and connection will make a huge difference.”

Fiona Collins, Head of Marketing, Lyons, added: “In Ireland, a chat over a cup of tea is how we look after each other. We drink so much tea as a nation that if you stacked up the bags, they’d tower nearly 2,000 Eiffel Towers high. At Lyons, we believe those everyday moments of talk can make the biggest difference. We are very proud to support Pieta through this important initiative, built on our shared belief in the power of connection.”
